IMAGINE 2018 | Vrijdagavond zijn tijdens de slotavond van het Imagine Film Festival diverse prijzen uitgereikt: de Black Tulip Award, de Méliès d’argent voor de beste Europese fantastische feature en korte film, de MovieZone Award en – voor het eerst – de Imagine VR Award. Winnaar Black Tulip Award: TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID (Issa López, Mexico 2017)
De jury bestond dit jaar uit regisseur Shady el Hamus, illustrator/designer Gees Voorhees en Mr. Horror en filmproducent Jan Doense.
Uit het juryrapport: “Een film die op een ongebruikelijke manier een groot sociaal en maatschappelijk probleem behandelt vanuit het perspectief van de slachtoffers. Fantasie en verbeelding worden ingezet om kracht uit te putten, maar het probleem zelf wordt er niet door opgelost. De film is trefzeker geregisseerd en ontroert zonder sentimenteel te worden.” (foto rechts)
Winnaar Méliès d’argent voor de beste Europese fantastische feature film: THE PLACE (Paolo Genovese, Italië 2017)
De jury bestond dit jaar uit actrice Olivia Lonsdale, fotostripmaker Ype Driessen en hoofdredacteur van Cine.nl Dandyano Zentveld.
Uit het juryrapport: “The Place is een onderzoek naar menselijk verlangen, waarin behoeftes aan de oppervlakte slechts een blik bieden op wat er diep van binnen begeerd wordt. Gewaagd en groots in opzet, maar intiem en persoonlijk in uitvoering, laat de film zien dat in deze wereld geen enkele daad zonder gevolg blijft.” (foto links)
Winnaar Méliès d’argent voor de beste Europese fantastische korte film: DOWNSIDE UP (Peter Ghesquière, België 2017)
De jury bestond dit jaar uit bestond uit scenarioschrijfster Jedidjah Noomen en hoofdredacteur van Preview Magazine Barend de Voogd (tevens Schokkend Nieuws).
Uit het juryrapport: “The winning short is a well-told fairytale that puts a smile on your face, with a screenplay that’s clear and logical but nevertheless manages to surprise you. Visually, the film also stands out; the production design is amazing and the imagery will stay in your mind for a long time. Plus, the cast of the film is simply irresistible and enjoyable. At first, this film might make you a bit uneasy. It’s a comedy, but are we really allowed to laugh? Thankfully that’s exactly the point of this short film. This fairytale about being different shows you a possible heavy subject without melodrama and is able to reel you in with honest emotions that we can all relate to.”
Winnaar van de MovieZone Award: COMPULSION (Àngel González, Spanje 2017)
De MovieZone Jury bestond dit jaar uit Elisabeth Tops, Noah Bos, Eddi Bruyn, Vareen Rook en Meander van Harrewijen.
Het juryrapport: “This thriller was for us the most intense film of the festival. The film had strong characters, and no weak spots in the cast. The dialogue is limited, but the tension building keeps you at the end of your seat. The magnificent Spanish landscape makes the film very strong, and it is really ingenious how the film is still so terrifying, even at daylight and in such a short length. We see a lot of potential in the director and we look forward to seeing his new films.”
Winnaar Imagine VR Award: SUMMATION OF FORCE (Narelle Autio, Trent Parke en Matthew Bate, Australië)
De jury van de allereerste Imagine VR Award bestond uit regisseur Anna Hoetjes, regisseur Marc Nollkaemper en docent aan de Filmacademie Jilt van Moorst.
Winnaar Imagine Pitch Contest: MEET JIMMY (David-Jan Bronsgeest, Nederland 2018)
De jury van de Imagine Pitch Contest bestond uit Consultant International Department bij het Filmfonds Ellis Driessen en Estische filmcriticus Karlo Funk. MEET JIMMY is geregisseerd door David-Jan Bronsgeest en geschreven door Tim Koomen (ook bekend van de Schokkend Nieuws podcast) – zie foto hieronder.
Na de prijsuitreiking werd de film GHOST STORIES vertoond, waarbij ook de regisseurs Andy Nyman en Jeremy Dyson aanwezig waren voor een introductie en nagesprek.
UPDATE: vannacht werd ook de winnaar van de publieksprijs bekend: de Silver Scream Award gaat naar ISLE OF DOGS (Wes Anderson) – lees hier de volledige juryrapporten.
